Caroline Mariko Stucky is an award-winning Swiss-Japanese independent filmmaker with a fierce passion for American culture. For Caroline, film, the world of the image, is the ultimate language that trumps the whirling kaleidoscope of spoken languages of her childhood. Her work includes fiction, documentary, commercial, live performance videos, and music videos. With an unusually technical background, Stucky is active as both a cinematographer and director. She has been a member of the International Collective of Female Cinematographers since 2018.
In 2018, Stucky shot seven music videos for Dave Keuning, guitarist of The Killers, for his debut solo album Prismism. She directed and shot three music videos released this winter/spring, Don’t You Worry, Only Love and Sunday Morning, for the band 2 Story Cabin, filming in New York and Rome. Last spring, she directed the pilot episode of Paramour No More, a half-hour TV show created by Rena Carter that was selected at the SeriesFest Season 5 and won the Creator Content Award from Women in Film & Television US. Her latest and most personal film Us had its US Premiere at the SAG-AFTRA New York Short Film Showcase in March 2017 and is now available on Amazon Prime. Also as a director, 2014 has marked the premieres of her two short films Paper Boats and Color/Blind in New York and Los Angeles.
Stucky has shot contents for clients including Facebook, Facebook at the Essence Festival, Disney, Dr. Phil, New York Times, Time’s Up, the Guggenheim Museum, Cartier, Deloitte, Siemens, Ferrero, Intuit, Medscape, Weatherproof Vintage, Tinder and the Basketball Hall of Fame, just to name a few, while working for various companies, as a director of photography or camera operator.
As for narrative fiction, her most notable work has been on Starfish, her first feature film as a cinematographer, which was selected in five film festivals and won the Audience Choice Award at the Mystic Film Festival 2018. The Perfect Bunny, written and directed by multiple Goya Award winner Jorge Laplace, Wishful Whiskers, a children's short starring Ilana Becker and Sophie Knapp. Brunch Wars, written and directed by Kamran Khan, which is a second collaboration with producer Pulkit Datta, writer/director of Wishful Whiskers, and Carry Me a show created by Alison Bartlett, starring herself, Chloe Levine and Joan Porter. Her second feature film Solomon, written & directed by J.B. Armstrong, was selected to the 2018 Sundance Detroit Private Master Class and the 2015 Sundance Detroit Screenwriters Intensive Lab.
Since 2015, Stucky has been documenting soprano Ariadne Greif ’s staged musical commissioning project called Dreams & Nightmares for a music documentary, Only a Dream, exploring the trials and serendipities of the creative process, that will come to conclusion in 2019.
At the start of her career, in 2012, Caroline received the Award of Merit at the Lucerne International Film Festival for her first short film, Caïssa. Since then, Caroline has directed several short films that were screened in festivals all over the world, including the Hollywood Weekly Magazine Film Festival, Shanghai Queer Film Festival, SAG-AFTRA Foundation New York, Woman CineMakers Biennial Edition, Bengaluru International Short Film Festival, Williamsburg International Film Festival, among many others.
