Simon Akkaya is an industrial designer and co-founder of the Amsterdam based product design studio HeijltjesAkkaya, which he leads together with Maarten Heijltjes.
Ever since 2009 they have been working together to create products that positively influence people and planet.
Graduated from TU Delft, Simon is passionate about blending conceptual design with engineering. With his studio he experiments to explore our relation to products, intrigued by the effects of the material surroundings on human behaviour.
In 2010 Simon’s research on design for pro-social behaviour was awarded during the Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven. This led to a collaboration between his studio and the nation’s leading retailer, Albert Heijn, to promote selflessness and sustainability on a national scale.
Studio HeijltjesAkkaya later designed the world’s first bio-composite e-bike that was more recently exhibited at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. In 2021 their design for DDB & HAK was awarded most innovative marketing product by the Effie Awards Netherlands. And in 2022 they won a Dezeen Award for best Work Place design with their human-powered work furniture (A Simple Machine) They have worked with companies such as DEPT agency, ING and Samsonite and their designs are placed in workspace environments of global brands like Adidas, Philips and Google.
