My name is Mazharul Vargas-Talukdar. I have been a cinematographer for almost 4 years. I love the art form of cinematography because it allows me to speak to my audience with visuals and storytelling.
My love for cinematography was something that I didn’t realize until much later. I went to school for engineering as that’s something my family wanted me to pursue. Even though I was enjoying it for a couple of years later I realized I was only doing it for status as that’s something that I was taught to value growing up. However, I realized status doesn't mean anything when you are not happy with what you are doing. And That’s when I went full-time creative!
I was already doing photography in my college years as a hobby. As I kept doing more shoots, collaborating with other artists, watching videos online, following what other creators in my field were doing- I kept learning more and more which gave me the confidence to start freelancing and putting myself out more. Then in 2019 I started working for a wedding company where I gained more skills; from how to manage a business to managing clients. At the same time, I started to take my freelance business more seriously and started to figure out more ways to be better at my craft.
That’s when I found D&AD shift program. This program opened my mind into all the possible ways I can challenge myself and set goals that will help me be the best version. And that’s what I want to do now, I want to take my love for cinematography to the next level by making inspiring films that people will find entertaining and informative.I want to expand the business that I started 3 years ago by working with the perfect partnership that will allow me to express my creativity to the fullest. From where I come from, this form of art was not encouraged. And that’s the idea I want to change. I want to contribute to making people realize that they too can follow their dream of being an artist if they are truly passionate. I want to be an artist that helps promote such stories by making films about them. I want to keep learning and growing my knowledge as much as I can in my field so that I can teach others as well.
Much like the main character in an anime, I want to be the hero of my story who sets a goal and moves towards that goal.
