Chrissa Amuah is a British-Ghanaian designer, curator, editor and creative consultant. Founder of the luxury homeware and interiors brand AMWA Designs, for which she draws inspiration from Ghanaian Adinkra symbols. Best described as a multi-disciplinary designer, she collaborates with world-leading multinational brands to bring her unique perspective, complimented with African sensibilities, to their projects.
Projects have included one-of-a-kind customisations for San Francisco-based sustainable footwear brand Allbirds (for whom she is also a brand ambassador). Her wallpaper has been sought after by the Detroit Institute of Arts. In 2022 she was commissioned by Mortlach, a Diageo owned whisky brand, to design the 2.81 light fixture.
Launched at Design Miami/ 2020, Freedom to Move saw her co-collaboration and conceptual design for luxury car brand Lexus. Chrissa has also designed an award-winning collection for Bernhardt Design – one of the largest and most prestigious textile and furniture manufacturers in the United States. The collection, A Sense of Duality, was recognized at the NeoCon HiP Awards, voted for by the top interior designers and journalists in America.
In 2017, Chrissa established AFRICA BY DESIGN – a showcase for the best of African design talent. Chrissa works to mentor and promote designers throughout sub-Saharan Africa and has staged exhibitions in five cities across four continents.
Frequently called on to speak about her work this has included moderating a panel conversation about African art and design entitled, ‘African Art & Design: Beyond A Trend’ for Sotheby’s.
Chrissa was invited to represent Ghana at the London Design Biennale 2021, creating a pavilion inside London's Somerset House with celebrated architect Alice Asafu-Adjaye.
Following the success of the Biennale, she was named as one of House & Garden magazine’s top 100 Designers shaping the world of contemporary design. She has since gone on to join the magazine as a contributing editor.
Educated at Chelsea College of Art and Design in London, she made her international debut at Milan Design Week 2015. Her work has gained global recognition, with features in Elle Décor (Italia and South Africa), the FT’s How To Spend It, Architectural Digest and Casa Vogue Brasil, to name a few. She is based in London.
