Aki Mizutani
- Director & Editor
- Japan
Aki splits her time and passion between the advertising and the documentary film worlds. She started her career at Cutters Los Angeles, apprenticing the market’s top editorial talent. In late 2011 she was tapped by director Lucy Walker to cut the Oscar-nominated documentary, “The Tsunami and the Cherry Blossom”. The film focuses on the aftermath of the 2011 earthquake and tsunami in northern Japan.
Aki is a dancer, and likens her editing approach to choreography. “Images have a natural rhythm. I look to create a sensual flow in my edits, making the story perfectly palatable for the viewer. Beyond conveying the story, editing is about making an intangible connection with the audience. I make it a point to appeal to the senses.”
Along with editing, Aki also has a burgeoning directorial career. She has directed for leading brands including Adidas, SK II and Yahoo.
