From working in a bookshop to brand tone of voice – Nick Parker on a career as a copywriter
D&AD President Rebecca Wright’s Still Learning Live interview series turns its focus to copywriting
From writing website UX copy, writing articles, to conceptualising taglines for campaigns, to totally reimagining a brand’s personality through it’s tone of voice, copywriting can take many forms – pretty much all of which Nick Parker has turned his hand to over the course of his career as a professional copywriter. Parker started out working in a bookshop while writing cartoons, and then transitioned into editorial publishing through learning desktop publishing programs. Since then, he’s built a career helping brands to find the right words – both as a writer and a coach who trains brand writers.
Recently, Parker sat down for a virtual chat with D&AD’s first President from education for the Still Learning Live series, designed to explore the way learning shapes and continues to play a role in all of our lives. Rebecca Wright, who is Dean at Central Saint Martins, asks Parker all about copywriting, how he developed his copywriting career, and found lots of advice and inspiration for copywriters and aspiring copywriters along the way.
