In conversation with Ana Arriola

We spoke with Ana on democratising AI, the next steps in the diversity and inclusion journey, and much more.

If you’ve used an iPhone, a Playstation or been on Facebook in the past 24 hours, you’ve been in an environment that Ana Arriola helped create. Ana has worked with most of the world’s biggest tech companies, helping Sony, Samsung, Apple, Adobe, Facebook and now Microsoft design for what she calls “real-people” problems.

At Microsoft she spends a lot of time working on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and is committed to making machine learning as inclusive as possible, building on her personal experiences as a non-binary trans Latinx woman. Born in LA, she moved to Japan as a teenager and now splits her time between San Francisco and Tokyo.

Prior to the Covid-19 outbreak, we spoke with Ana on radical inclusion, fixing patriarchal colonialism with artificial intelligence, the next steps in the journey of diversity and inclusion, and much more.

Is it right you worked as an intern on The Simpsons?

Yeah I did, seasons three and four, right before I graduated High School. I was really keen on becoming a storyboard artist and so I became a production assistant for the studio. I would drive around LA and pick up scripts from writers. I was taught how to break down scripts and things like framing out key scenes. It was really fun.
