Splash Spots

Award: Wood Pencil

Wood Pencil / Product Design / Technological Innovation / 2024

For more than 100 years, when the temperature soars in New York City, people turn to neighborhood fire hydrants in search of watery relief. However, the existing hydrant caps that spray water are rudimentary at best, and are often left on unsupervised, flowing into the streets and wasting water. That is how the idea of Splash Spots was born. We created a more whimsical spray cap that conserves 50% more water than a standard spray cap. Splash Spots ensure that a uniquely NYC tradition can continue but at the same time make less of an environmental impact.

What did the judges have to say?

I love the idea of building on organic social activity and creating a unique intervention in the public domain that celebrates it, while also making it more responsible. Rather then engineering social movements, it reinforces them them and also the city infrastructure in which they live, in a playful, meaningful way.
