The Autism Journey
Wood Pencil / Impact / Initiative / 2024
1 in 36 children in Brazil have autism, but underdiagnosis suggests the true number may be higher. Early intervention is crucial, and Picture Exchange Communication Systems (PECS) help non-verbal autistic children express themselves. However, traditional PECS cards, unchanged since 1985, are expensive and lack personalization.
In light of this, Vivo, in partnership with the first autism shelter in Brazil, AMA, democratized the use of AI and now families can create PECS inspired by each child's hyperfocus, making the material much more engaging.
