The First Digital Nation
Shortlist / Impact / Initiative / 2024
The First Digital Nation, announced at COP27 in 2023 by Tuvaluan Minister Simon Kofe is both a heartbreaking wake up call and pragmatic plan for survival, a response to the question “What happens to a country without land?” One year on, as the nation faces the reality of the loss of their physical land by 2050, and subsequent displacement of their 12,000 strong population, the project is continuing to impact climate funding, international policy and alliances, and our own understanding of what constitutes a country.
