Flies can transmit up to 65 diseases, including deadly typhoid. Open-air school canteens make children highly vulnerable to flies, and poor mealtime hygiene puts them at risk.
Dulux wanted to help. Through research, a solution was found: Flies hate yellow. We tested food on two tables—one painted in yellow, the other untouched. Astonishingly, flies were only drawn to the non-yellowed table.
We then transformed school canteens by painting tables, benches, and walls in yellow. The result? The Yellow Canteens effectively repelled flies, creating a healthier dining environment for students.
What did the judges have to say?
It only got shortlisted, but it's such a simple idea that potentially transforms the lives of so many children. No high-tech necessary.
