Australia is the only country in the world to celebrate its national day on the day it was colonised. Held on January 26th, for many, Australia Day is known as Invasion Day and celebrating it displays a shameful level of indifference towards First Nations lives.
On 26 January 2023, We Are Warriors (WAW) – an Indigenous youth-focused initiative highlighting Blak excellence – launched with the Blak Powerhouse. The event saw us take over Sydney’s Powerhouse museum with performances and art, reclaiming this as a day of power for Indigenous Australians, and cementing WAW in culture.
