To launch the final series of Derry Girls – the cult comedy set in 1990s Northern Ireland – Channel 4 brought back the teen magazine Smash Hits! for a one-off, bespoke special. The magazine featured 28 pages of specially shot, written, and designed articles, including 90s-style fashion shoots, how-to dance moves, advice columns, and record reviews, all featuring or in the voice of the show’s main characters. Working with the editor of Smash Hits!, Channel 4 created an authentic version of the magazine that looked and felt exactly like it did 25 years ago – but with a Derry Girls spin.
