SoulFuel Safe Lamp
Shortlist / Product Design / Everyday Consumer Products / 2022
Informal settlements in South Africa experience around 6,000 fires a year, claiming hundreds of lives and leaving thousands of people homeless. People living in extreme poverty cannot afford electricity or otherwise do not have access to it, meaning they often turn to cheap light sources. Chicken Licken, a much-loved fast-food brand and an integral part of these communities, wanted to do something to help, so it launched the Soulfuel Safe Lamp: a safer alternative to these cheap lighting, which are the leading cause of these fires.
