edish: Giving Eternal Life to Food Containers
Shortlist / Product Design / Responsible Products / 2022
Japan has the second highest rate of single-use container waste per person in the world. To reduce how much waste is created, and then incinerated, Japan needed a new way of tackling recycling. Hakuhodo used its own technology to turn waste resulting from food processing into containers to be supplied to restaurants by using a composting device. After use, the dishes are collected in a dedicated box, pulverised, fermented and made into nutritious compost or feed for parks and nearby farms. With this double upcycling process, the system transforms waste that used to be discarded into something of enormous value.
