In Germany, emergency services are impacted by onlookers filming road accidents with their smartphones. To deter them from doing so, an innovative digital pattern was designed to function like a camouflaged QR code that covered ambulances, paramedics and equipment. Smartphone cameras immediately picked up the multi-angle QR codes and displayed a warning directly on their screens, showing the consequences of their actions and how to behave more appropriately when an accident has taken place.

What did the judges have to say?
"It uses a really simple approach effectively. Within the technical limitations it does its job."
Keita Kuroki, Technical Director, BASSDRUM
"The life-saving QR design is a brilliant idea to stop onlookers in emergency situations, simply but effectively solving the problem. It’s a great example of the truth of design: design doesn't need to be intricate, or visually appealing, but it must solve people's problems."
Sherry Wu, Design Manager, Samsung Electronics America
