The Plastic Museum
Graphite Pencil / Spatial Design / Exhibitions / 2022
The Plastic Museum was the first museum in the world that opened its doors in anticipation of closing them – and recycling them. All of the walls, ceilings and floors were built out of modern and sustainable plastics. After its closure, the whole museum was recycled into its own merchandise and a book that tells its story. For the first time, a museum was dedicated to promoting the proper use of plastic, which in turn improved its reputation. It was open to visitors in Madrid in May 2021 to coincide with World Recycling Day, and displayed inside was everything from a bionic hand and a respirator to a bicycle made with recycled plastic.
What did the judges have to say?
"It was great that this project embodied what it preached. Plastic itself is a common issue, but the way this work transcended the rhetoric and actually physicalised the system was interesting to me."
