Kukka
Graphite Pencil / Packaging Design / Small Batch / 2022
Wood Pencil / Branding / Health & Wellbeing
People in Finland are said to sleep the longest on average, whereas in Japan, one in five people have insomnia, and it is now considered a national disease. Kukka, which means 'flower' in Finnish, is an organic essential oil mist that classifies insomnia symptoms into five types based on Chinese medicine. The oil mist itself uses essential oils found in flowers, and its labels were designed with tactility in mind. The mist comes in a uniquely designed glass bottle in order to eliminate the use of plastic, which was designed to be reused as a single-flower vase after use.
What did the judges have to say?
"This is a brand that was submitted in the Small Batch Sub Category, and it is the first time that D&AD introduced this category. Not only this package holds the contents in a special bottle shape, but the designers also played the use of small batch production brilliantly. Small batch production usually has different constrains from mass produced consumer packages. The process demands minimising the amount of tooling and templates. In this case, they used the same glass bottles and box graphics for all SKUs and differentiated by using unique stickers. The design translated their distinct bottle shapes graphically on the outer packaging."
