The National Magazine Awards celebrate excellence in journalism and visual creation. For more than 45 years, it has been considered the most prestigious award in Canada’s magazine publishing community. To create an identity for the 2021 awards, Rethink Canada drew inspiration from a the spine of a magazine.
What did the judges have to say?
"Design is about synthesis. The cleverness and simplicity in using a magazine’s most distilled form, the spine, to create an identity for their 2021 awards was outstanding. The kind of project that makes you think, ‘I wish I had done that’."
Gustavo Greco, Creative Director, Greco Design
"This was a genuinely envy-making piece of work. The simplicity and singularity of the idea was executed to perfection. So simple. So good."
Mick Boston, Design Leader, Lion
"The most simple idea and design that intuitively communicates what it needs to communicate. Inspiring, great design and fit for purpose. I wish I was the designer of this piece of work."
Rene Chen, Chief Creative Officer, Jones Knowles Ritchie
"Super ingenious in just using the spines as the key graphic element! Colours and type are just right as well. Perfectly done, just perfect, hands down!"
Yah-Leng Yu, Creative Director & Principal, Foreign Policy Design Group
