Gridworks’ challenge was to create and publish a unique catalogue celebrating the art collection of Mrs Jay and W Gordon Smith – the culmination of a lifetime’s work. W Gordon Smith was an art critic, author, dramatist, photographer and filmmaker known for his iconic BBC arts programmes (Scope and Spectrum). The goal was to focus on the artists and reproduce their works, and took the form of a reference book titled A–L/M–Z. A rich resource of artworks and biographies, including a selection of typewritten exhibition reviews and archive material, it became a collector’s item in itself.
