Bicycle Parking Garage The Hague
Wood Pencil / Design Transformation / Spatial / 2021
Shortlist / Graphic Design / Environmental
The underground bicycle parking garage in front of The Hague Central Station is one of the largest in the world. Its design redefines the typology, transforming the simple act of parking your bike into a museum-like experience. The back-lit glass walls, featuring a stunning urban landscape that comprises facade elements of iconic buildings, enhance the comfort, safety, and sense of place. For the municipality of The Hague, the parking garage combines an essential service for commuters with a unique and immersive experience for visitors.
What did the judges have to say?
"Brilliant idea that fits the purpose. They transformed what would normally be a grey and dull experience of a bicycle parking garage into something positive and memorable. This highlights how design can transform such a ‘low interest’ product or space into more than just function, but also add a bit of surprise and joy in someone's daily routine."
