MarinaTex
Future Impact Pencil / Future Impact / Design / 2020
MarinaTex is a home-compostable material designed as an alternative to some single-use plastic films. Comprised of biological waste from the fishing industry and red algae, the material will biodegrade in 4-6 weeks in a home-compostable environment. It won’t leech harmful chemicals and initial tensile tests show it is stronger than LDPE at the same thickness. Through research and over 100 kitchen experiments, the material developed into a potential, planet conscious alternative to non-recyclable plastic films. Created as an undergraduate project, the material is in early stages of development.
