The Hug
Wood Pencil / Book Design / Children's Picture Books / 2020
The story of two outsiders looking for acceptance, told from both sides of the same book and designed to make children consider empathy and kindness. The Hug has been translated into 19 languages, including bilingual versions, and was the only children's book to be included in The Guardian's Books of the Year.
What did the judges have to say?
A simple but very effective device of two stories that read from both sides of the book and meet in the middle in a warm hug explosion. Polly's illustrations are full of character and just exquisite. This charming and delightful book won over the hearts of all the judges and clutching a Wood Pencil, we gave it the hug it deserved.
