Pulp II: A Visual Bibliography of the Banished Book
Wood Pencil / Typography / Books / 2019
Pulp: A Short Biography of the Banished Book, is a decade long project by artist Shubigi Rao about the history of book destruction, censorship and other forms of repression, as well as the book as symbol and resistance. This is the second manifestation of that research. Pulp is ‘the book as content-driven object’, where design and typography extend the subject, not decorate it. The use of cinnabar is historically significant, as is employing margins as profane spaces against the ‘sanctified’ text. The handwritten marginalia also points to the contemporary theme of marginalisation in the book.
