Jay-Z "Smile"
Graphite Pencil / Music Videos / Cinematography for Music Videos / 2018
Perfectly capturing 1970s Brooklyn, this short follows Jay-Z’s mother, Gloria Carter, as she grapples with her suppressed love for a female neighbour. Poignant, close-up shots show how both women must hide their homosexuality for the betterment of their children. The music cuts in and out at hard-hitting moments, breaking the story into emotional beats.
