The Slave Calendar
Wood Pencil / Writing for Design / Writing for Printed Materials & Graphic Communications / 2017
The tens of thousands of slaves who were torn from their homes and brought to South Africa have been all but forgotten. They were stripped of everything. Even their names. And renamed after the month in which they arrived.
The Slave Calendar documents the lost stories of these men and women. It has become a local and international front page news story, endorsed by Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, and is now an on-going exhibit at the Iziko Slave Museum in Cape Town.
More than that, though, it has given a voice to the tragedy of these long-forgotten Januaries to Decembers.
