The New York Times Magazine / The Music Issue
Graphite Pencil / Magazine & Newspaper Design / Print with Digital/Magazines / 2017
Brief:
A special print and digital music themed issue of the magazine.
Solution & Cultural Context:
We used 25 songs as jumping off points for short essays about what’s happening in music today. Structurally, the issue references a stream of music, with each piece flowing from the next, while the design borrows from gig posters’ use of bright color and bold typography.
Online, the issue is navigable through a playlist menu, and each essay is accompanied by the music that inspired it. We made autoplay music less intrusive by transitioning from song to song with an audio cross-fade.
Audience & Distribution:
Our magazine is a weekly publication distributed in the Sunday edition of The New York Times.
