Pulp: A Short Biography of the Banished Book Vol. I of V

Award: Wood Pencil

Wood Pencil / Book Design / Culture, Art & Design Books / 2017

Pulp: A Short Biography of the Banished Book is a decade long project by artist Shubigi Rao about the history of book destruction, censorship and other forms of repression, as well as the book as symbol and resistance. This publication is a manifestation of the research. Pulp is ‘the book as content-driven object’, where design and typography extend the subject, not decorate it. The use of cinnabar is historically significant, as is employing margins as profane spaces against the ‘sanctified’ text. The handwritten marginalia also points to the contemporary theme of marginalization in the book.
