The Guardian Weekend Magazine: Mothers' milk
Wood Pencil / Magazine & Newspaper Design / Magazine Front Covers / 2016
The cover illustrates a piece by novelist Elisa Albert, about her struggles to breastfeed her baby - and how a close friend stepped in to feed her son. For this intimate story we wanted a cover that was graphic, warm, humanising and relatable. An immediate way into the story that did not sensationalise it. We cast a model and two babies of a similar age. We cropped the image to keep the focus on the breasts and give the illusion the two babies were feeding. We wanted the woman to look strong and empowered, with the babies unsupported, which we achieved.
