MegaFaces
Graphite Pencil / Digital Design / Technological Innovation / 2015
Russian telecom operator MegaFon encouraged attendees to make the 2014 Winter Olympics a personal experience. Inspired by the selfie, MegaFaces is a cross-platform project conceived and built for Sochi 2014. Formed by 11,000 telescopic actuators, this kinetic facade transformed to recreate visitors' faces on a monumental scale. Facial impressions were relayed to the facade from scans made in 3D photo booths located around the pavilion, and in MegaFon stores across Russia. An algorithm transformed the faces, taking into account daylighting, scale, rotation and colour, and presented them on what is effectively the world's first 3D actuated large-scale LED screen.
