Labyrinth by Mark Wallinger
Graphite Pencil / Crafts for Design / Illustration for Design / 2014
‘Labyrinth’ by artist Mark Wallinger is ‘Art on the Underground’s’ most ambitious commission to date. It comprises 270 permanent vitreous enamel artworks – one for each station across the network. The artworks were produced in collaboration with Rose and Mazescape to commemorate London Underground’s 150th anniversary. Each unique black and white graphic labyrinth has a red 'X' at its entrance, symbolising the beginning of the viewer's journey, evoking the 'you are here' logo found on city maps. They represent the experience of orientation felt by the millions of Londoners and visitors who use the labyrinthine network every day.
