The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts organised ‘The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk’, the first retrospective exhibition to be devoted to the famous fashion designer. The monograph accompanying it was not intended to be a conventional exhibition catalogue, but a true reference on Gaultier’s work. In a nod to the French sailor sweater forever associated with Gaultier, the book’s cover was designed to produce an optical effect revealing various striking images of the designer and his work as the book is removed from its navy- and white-striped slipcase.
