The New York Trilogy
Wood Pencil / Book Design / Book Front Covers / 2010
Faber and Faber produced an 80th anniversary series of first novels by some of their best known authors, called ‘Faber Firsts’. The brief was to reference a period of Faber’s early design history, with each cover devised by a different designer or illustrator. Art Director Donna Payne selected Jon Gray, known as Gray318, to design a cover for Paul Auster’s ‘The New York Trilogy’. Gray318’s design reflects the graphic, two-colour cover solutions from the 1940s to the early 1960s in the Faber archive. His cover is a simple graphic attempt to illustrate three stories with two colours. The bars cross to create the third colour.
