Reactable
Wood Pencil / Product Design / Public Space / 2008
The reactable was intended to be a right-brained musical instrument for multi-user, electronic music performance: intuitive, non-intimidating and suitable for everyone to play straight away. Creating can be fun, but we did not want to develop a sound toy that would become boring and predictable after a few minutes. We wanted to create something challenging and complex; like a traditional musical instrument, something that was capable of rewarding the effort and time spent mastering it. The reactable has a tangible and visually compelling user interface, which makes music visible and almost touchable. It is based on a luminous round table where performers can move, rotate and relate glowing acrylic objects that represent the building blocks of electronic music.
