New Blood Entry — The Adnams Ark

Award: Wood Pencil

Adnams / 2019

The earth is getting hotter. Sea levels are rising. Before long, Southwold, home of Adnams, will disappear underwater. So, what better way to raise awareness and prepare for the impending flood than building a modern-day Noah’s Ark?

Built from entirely recycled materials, the Adnams Ark is completely sustainable. And it’s a pub. Specially-made drinks – the Vanishing Coast range – are sold onboard, and the profits help families whose homes have been destroyed by climate-change-exacerbated coastal erosion.

The Adnams Ark journeys around the UK on land. Seeing a giant ark in town centres nowhere near the sea is bound to cause a stir. The route is shared on social media, and physical paper maps.

In coastal towns, Adnams organises beach clean-ups – volunteers are rewarded with free pints onboard – and uses materials collected to build new Adnams Arks.

Adnams raise awareness of the plight of our often-forgotten coasts, create a sense of solidarity between coastal communities, and spark a fresh conversation on climate change.
