Mark the Time

One in three people in the US have a criminal record, restricting their ability to get housing, education, and a job, in turn punishing them long after they’re released from prison. Clean Slate aims to seal criminal records to help millions of people rebuild their lives. With just two weeks before state legislators were set to vote on the issue, Mark the Time was born. A powerful mural was hand-painted by a formerly incarcerated New Yorker, reappropriating tally marks to illustrate the injustice and inequality that incarcerated people face after they’re released. Because a conviction record shouldn’t be a life sentence.
