Chess Story
- IllustrationPublication Covers
Stefan Zweig wrote The Royal Game, otherwise known as Chess Story, in the 1940s. If the book was going to reach a new generation of readers, it would need a new cover. The horse in the cover illustration is full of symbolism, at once an important chess piece, a symbol of war and, for the main character fleeing the horrors of Nazism, a means of escape.
