New Blood Entry — Spare Change News
Monotype - Realise the importance of type / 2014
Spare Change News is a bimonthly publication based in Cambridge, Massachusetts. It is the nation’s oldest street paper, founded in 1992 by a group of homeless vendors backed by the Homeless Empowerment Project. All content is generated by locals — journalism students, interns, volunteers, even vendors themselves. Their mission is to show that homeless and economically disadvantaged people are capable of creating change in society. However, the current designs haven't effectively communicated the nature of the publication. Our solution was based on the concept of “community” — using the typography to empower the homeless. The re-design displays personality and reflects the local community.
